Tough Mudder vs Regular Running

If you are a runner and are looking to mix things up a bit, Tough Mudder is definitely a race you've got to check out! I love to run and have enjoyed competing in marathons, half marathons and relay runs.  Last year I was invited to participate in a couple of mud runs and I had so much fun with them!  I ran with a few of my good friends and we had such a good time running in the mud and helping each other over obstacles. I thought I would hate getting muddy, but once I got going and was covered in mud it wasn't a problem at all and I actually quite enjoyed it.

A few months ago a friend of mine invited me to sign up for a Tough Mudder with him.  I looked at their website and watched a couple of videos and was totally hooked.  I will admit I was a bit terrified to do it.  Tough Mudders are like the ULTIMATE obstacle and mud run and I didn't know if I'd have the strength to survive some of the obstacles.

We ran the Las Vegas Tough Mudder a couple of weeks ago and I LOVED IT!  The obstacles were challenging and the course was more than 11 miles long.  We ran through the desert, through mud, up mountains and through swamps.  Everyone there helped each other out and I had people I didn't know helping me to climb over walls and making it up Mt. Everest (awesome obstacle!).   It was exhausting and I was covered in bruises and scratches, but I was so proud of myself for finishing.

Compared to regular running, I think Tough Mudder adds variety and a bit of excitement to running.  You still run quite a bit (10 to 12 miles) and the miles are broken up with fun and challenging obstacles.  Its a great test of your physical and mental strength.  I think everyone should complete at last one Tough Mudder in their lifetime.  You'll be suprised by how strong you body truly is.
